Improved reliability and optimised operations and maintenance for wind energy systems

Expected Outcome:

Project results are expected to contribute to all of the following expected outcomes:

• Limit the risks related to wind energy systems (e.g., operational, financial, climate) and thus reduce the wind energy projects’ uncertainties;
• The European wind energy supply chain strengthens its strategic autonomy, technology leadership, competitiveness, and technology export potential.

Scope:

Proposals are expected to address at least four of the following aspects:

• Develop and validate solutions to increase the reliability of wind energy systems and their components, thus ensuring security of supply and further reducing the environmental impacts;
• Develop new methods, computational techniques and tools to analyse and predict the reliability of wind energy systems, considering the analysis of the failure modes of existing systems and including a focus on new analytical approaches, technologies and materials;
• Develop new methods and tools for condition and health monitoring of wind energy systems and their components;
• Develop and validate solutions to optimise the operation and maintenance of wind energy systems and their components, for example through improved scheduling and predictive maintenance, autonomous tools, robots and vehicles, semi-automated inspection methods or advanced repair methods;
• Develop and validate new components to be incorporated in structures’ designs to improve the safety and efficiency on-site during maintenance activities in wind farms;
• Develop and validate innovative digital tools to facilitate wind farm operation and maintenance, for instance through improved interoperability, decision-making support tools, condition and health monitoring techniques and innovative sensors, while ensuring increased cybersecurity and data sharing.

The solutions proposed have to provide solid evidence to support the choice of the sub-systems and components in focus. They have to be critical for the overall reliability of the wind energy systems. For instance, in the case of floating offshore wind, these could be dynamic cables, moorings and connection systems (electrical and mechanical) and their interaction with complex ocean flows.

Particular efforts should be made to ensure that the data produced in the context of this topic is FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable).

Digitalisation plays a prominent role under various perspectives, for instance in terms of improved predictive maintenance activities and advanced sensors technologies for diagnostics, condition and health monitoring of the power electronics, and structural health assessment and monitoring.

Projects should aim at reducing downtime and operational costs, enhancing safety protocols for maintenance crews, and increasing the overall lifespan and efficiency of wind energy assets.

These solutions should be easily standardised and/or should take into account current standardisation efforts, notwithstanding the TRL level envisaged for the projects developed under this topic.

Horizon Europe is een kaderprogramma van de EU voor onderzoek en innovatie. Ze bestaat uit 3 pijlers: Excellente wetenschappen, Wereldwijde uitdagingen en Europees industrieel concurrentievermogen en Innovatief Europa. Daarnaast bevat het programma ook nog een horizontaal deel met maatregelen om de lidstaten te ondersteunen om optimaal gebruik te maken van hun nationale onderzoeks- en innovatiepotentieel en de Europese onderzoeksruimte te versterken. Het beoogt ook de wetenschappelijke en technologische basis van de EU en de Europese Onderzoeksruimte (EOR) te versterken, het innovatie- en concurrentievermogen en de werkgelegenheid te stimuleren.

Eerste pijler: Excellente wetenschappen

• Europese Onderzoeksraad (ERC): Er zijn beurzen beschikbaar voor getalenteerde en creatieve individuele onderzoekers en hun teams om baanbrekend onderzoek te doen. De integratie van verschillende gebieden is cruciaal. Alle nationaliteiten komen in aanmerking, maar het onderzoek moet worden uitgevoerd in een van de lidstaten of geassocieerde landen.
• Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA): De focus ligt op het bevorderen van mobiliteit, loopbaanontwikkeling en opleidingsmogelijkheden voor onderzoekers. MSCA biedt ondersteuning voor verschillende opties voor (wereldwijde) uitwisseling van onderzoekers en ondersteunend personeel binnen hetzelfde vakgebied of tussen verschillende sectoren.
• Onderzoeksinfrastructuur (RI): ontwikkeling, onderhoud en gebruik van pan-Europese onderzoeksinfrastructuur is een prioriteit. Er zijn mogelijkheden voor onderwijs en uitwisseling van personeel voor het onderhoud en gebruik van de infrastructuur. Coördinatie van het gebruik van de infrastructuur tussen de lidstaten is van groot belang.

Tweede pijler: Wereldwijde uitdagingen en Europees industrieel concurrentievermogen

Deze pijler richt zich op de wereldwijde uitdagingen die zijn geïdentificeerd in de Sustainable Development Goals. Om de schaal en complexiteit van deze problemen aan te pakken, is samenwerking nodig tussen belanghebbenden uit verschillende sectoren, waaronder onderzoeks- en onderwijsinstellingen, de industrie en NGO’s. Daarnaast moet deze inspanning bijdragen aan een robuuste Europese industriële sector, die banen creëert en het concurrentievermogen vergroot.

De tweede pijler focust op wereldwijde uitdagingen en bestaat uit zes clusters:

1. Gezondheid
2. Cultuur, creativiteit en een inclusieve samenleving
3. Civiele veiligheid voor de samenleving
4. Digitaal, industrie en ruimtevaart
5. Klimaat, energie en mobiliteit
6. Voeding, bio-economie, natuurlijke grondstoffen, landbouw en milieu

Het Gemeenschappelijk Centrum voor Onderzoek van de Europese Commissie (JRC) valt ook onder deze pijler.

Derde pijler: Innovatief Europa

De derde pijler is Innovatief Europa, met als doel Europa een leidende rol te laten spelen op het gebied van marktgestuurde innovatie. Daarnaast draagt deze pijler bij aan de ontwikkeling van het innovatielandschap van de Europese Unie door de samenwerking tussen bedrijven, onderzoeksinstellingen en het hoger onderwijs te versterken.

• Europese Innovatieraad (EIC) richt zich op het bevorderen van baanbrekende innovaties met wereldwijd schaalpotentieel.
• Europese innovatie-ecosystemen (EIE) zullen voornamelijk dienen als aanvulling op de EIC, EIT en aanverwante programma’s om samen het algehele innovatie-ecosysteem in Europa te verbeteren.
• Europees Instituut voor Innovatie en Technologie (EIT) richt zich vooral op het vergroten van het innovatievermogen van Europa door ondernemerstalent te koesteren en nieuwe ideeën te ondersteunen.

Horizontale pijler: Deelname verbreden en de Europese Onderzoeksruimte versterken

• Deelname verbreden en excellentie verspreiden
• De Europese O&I-systemen hervormen en verbeteren

Daarnaast heeft horizon een nieuwe aanpak voor het vinden van oplossingen voor grote problemen in de Europese sfeer, namelijk in de vorm van missies;

1. Adaptation to Climate Change: support at least 150 European regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030
2. Cancer: working with Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan to improve the lives of more than 3 million people by 2030 through prevention, cure and solutions to live longer and better
3. Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030
4. 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030
5. A Soil Deal for Europe: 100 living labs and lighthouses to lead the transition towards healthy soils by 2030

Deelnemers:

In veel gevallen is Europese samenwerking nodig om in aanmerking te komen voor subsidie.

Cofinanciering

Het maximale subsidiepercentage binnen Horizon Europe varieert van 70% tot volledige projectfinanciering (100% subsidie).
